Tuberoses

Rajnigandha, the night-scented tuberose, is the flower that gives an Indian wedding garland its body and its perfume. The long white florets are threaded tightly in rows, so a tuberose haar looks almost like a column of pearls, and it is usually the base that carnations, baby roses or oleander are spaced against. In Maharashtra and the south it is also called gulchadi or sugandharaja.

You will find tuberose in pairs of 30-inch varmala with pink or red carnation, in garlands dotted with red and yellow baby roses, in flower strings sold by the metre for mandap pillars, car bonnets and stage backdrops, in white-and-oleander strings for temple doors, and in full bridal flower-jewellery sets. Because the florets are firm, tuberose holds up better in warm rooms than jasmine or petals.

Choose a plain white tuberose string for pujas and condolence, and a mixed garland when the occasion is a celebration.

Tuberoses in Dubai – questions & answers

Is tuberose too strong a scent for an indoor wedding?

Tuberose is sweet and carries further than most flowers, especially after dark. A pair of varmala and a few hand pieces rarely overwhelm a hall. If you plan many metres of strings in a small room, mix tuberose with carnation or rose strings, which have little scent, to keep the air comfortable.

How are tuberose strings measured and hung?

Tuberose strings are sold per metre and arrive coiled in a box. They are tied at the top of a pillar, door frame or mandap beam and left to hang straight, or looped in swags. Measure the height of each drop and order the total length in metres.

Which flowers are paired with tuberose in a varmala?

The most requested pairings here are pink or red carnation, red and yellow baby roses, and red or pink oleander for strings. White tuberose with red rose gives the classic North-Indian look, while tuberose with oleander or vadamalli is closer to South-Indian and Sri Lankan styles.

Do you deliver tuberoses the same day?
