Jasmine
Jasmine is the scent most South-Asian brides remember from their wedding day. The small white mogra buds are picked closed and open slowly through the evening, so a jasmine gajra pinned around a bun or a kangan on each wrist releases more fragrance as the night goes on. In Tamil, Malayali and Sri Lankan homes it is also the everyday flower for the hair and for the temple.
Here jasmine appears mostly as kangan bracelets sold by the piece, plain or worked with red rose petals, baby roses or yellow chrysanthemum, and inside full bridal flower-jewellery sets that combine jasmine with tuberose and carnation petals for earrings, maang tika and hand pieces. Each bud is threaded by hand at the Deira workshop on the day it leaves.
Order one kangan per wrist for guests and bridesmaids, and a matching set for the bride, so the whole family wears the same flower.

Jasmine in Dubai – questions & answers
Why does jasmine smell stronger in the evening?
Jasmine buds are threaded while still closed and open gradually after a few hours, which is when the scent is released. A gajra delivered in the afternoon is usually at its most fragrant by the evening function. Keeping it cool slows the opening; leaving it at room temperature speeds it up.
How do I keep a jasmine kangan fresh until the function?
Leave it in its box, wrap the box loosely in a damp cloth or tissue and place it in the fridge, away from fruit. A light mist of water before wearing helps. Avoid sealing it in a dry plastic bag, which bruises and browns the buds within a few hours.
How many jasmine kangan should I order for a mehndi?
Most families order two per guest who wants them, one for each wrist, plus a fuller set for the bride. Priced from AED 5 each, plain kangan suit a large group, while rose-petal or chrysanthemum versions are often chosen for the bride's sisters and close friends.
