Oleander

Arali, as oleander is called in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Sri Lanka, is the temple flower of the south. Its red and pink blossoms are offered at the shrine, threaded around deity photographs and hung over the door on festival mornings, and it is among the few flowers sold here mainly for worship rather than for weddings.

You can buy it loose, in red or pink, for puja plates and archana, or as hand-strung strings in red, in pink, and alternated with white tuberose, sold by the length for altars, door frames and pooja rooms. Oleander also appears as the coloured accent on a marigold kangan and in a white, maroon and green toran made for Diwali and wedding entrances.

Oleander is meant for display and offering only. It is not edible and the sap can irritate skin, so keep it away from food, children and pets, and wash your hands after handling loose flowers.

Oleander in Dubai – questions & answers

Is oleander safe to use at home?

Oleander is safe to display and offer, which is how it has been used in temples for centuries, but every part of the plant is poisonous if eaten. Do not place it on food or prasad, keep loose flowers out of reach of children and pets, and wash hands after handling.

How much loose arali do I need for a puja?

For a home archana or daily offering, a 100 g pack of loose arali is usually enough. For a larger festival puja, a havan or decorating several deity frames, order more or add strings. Tell us the occasion on WhatsApp and we will suggest a quantity for your altar.

Why is oleander paired with white tuberose?

The red or pink oleander and white tuberose alternation is the classic South-Indian temple string: the colours read clearly from a distance and tuberose adds the fragrance that oleander lacks. It is the usual choice for pooja-room doors, deity photographs and Onam or Tamil New Year decoration.
